The babies are so much fun right now. They are all old enough to really enjoy learning and they have had some fun 'field' trips' to visit some of our favorite puppy socializers. They are doing great with other dogs and with the kids that love to carry them around. They are all ready to meet their forever families!

This week we moved the babies from Ruby's guardian home over to the Hatch house. They are transitioning to the dog door very well. They aren't quite fully going outside to go potty but they should have this new skill mastered by the end of the week. Yay for puppies pooping outside! When we dog-door-train we use their natural instinct to keep their bed clean to encourage them to explore the dog door to go potty outside. Thankfully we finally have nice spring weather here in Idaho and it's so nice to have puppies playing in the sunshine! We introduce new experiences and new stimulation every day to help develop neuro-flexibility. Their brains are almost fully developed and ready for training--once they hit 7 weeks we will start introducing clicker training so they will start to learn that it pays to figure out what we want them to do!

The babies are almost four weeks old! We finally have some signs of spring peeking out here in Idaho and the puppies are really enjoying the chance to play outside each afternoon. They have started potty training with a crate to sleep in and a paper area for potty time. Dogs instinctively keep their sleeping 'den' clean. We use this instinct to help with learning to go potty only in specific areas eventually imprinting on outside as the proper place for potty time. They are just starting to develop control over potty activities and are getting better and better at only using the paper. They will start using a dog door to go outside this next week. They are all eating solid food and nursing less each day. They are just getting their little molars in and will be ready to move to hard crunch food in the next week as they nurse less and eat more and more. They get handling and loving from the kids in the Anderson home every day. Personalities are starting to develop but we won't really be able to see specific personalities until they are closer to 6 weeks old.

Ruby has five 'Sweet as candy' babies! We are still waiting for genetic tests to come back so we will know specifics about coat types and textures. Ruby and her puppies are with their guardian family and our puppy nanny Reann. They do a great job with the babies. They are all developing right on schedule and are beloved little bundles. As always, Ruby is a devoted mama--she keeps her babies warm and clean and quiet. The kids in Ruby's human family include two special needs kids that are especially nurturing for the little puppies. All the love and handling helps to develop calm and flexible personalities. Pictures are on their way!

The babies have grown and changed so much over the last week! They are all using the dog door 100% to go potty outside. They run in and out throughout the day. We have play time in the living room each day as well and they are just learning to take treats from our hands. They are all eating hard crunch dog food and doing well with that transition as well. This next week we will have vet checks and we will continue to work on individual socialization and basic training.

The puppies are all growing right on schedule. They have been spending time outside every day in our beautiful early summer weather.
The puppies are all very steady on their feet now and are getting really playful (especially with each other). They are doing great with their potty training by using the potty area about 95% of the time and they are keeping their beds clean all of the time.
Puppies are now transitioning over to solid dry crunch kibble as they are getting their teeth. We will keep offering soft food until they all have their molars.
This is week three of the socialization period. This week the puppies have begun to learn and be shaped by other adult dogs in the household but especially mom. Learning dog manners is a skill that can only be taught by other dogs! We always watch interactions with other dogs closely. Mom is really the best teacher as she will stop or pin puppies that are overly energetic or that aren't picking up on cues to settle down. This interaction is important to learning good dog social skills. They are also learning how to use their teeth without causing damage. They teach each other that lesson as they constantly mouth and play with each other.
We will give the puppies their Neopar vaccines this week. Neopar helps develop immunity to Parvo--it is the only vaccine that is effective at this young age as these puppies still have passive immunity from nursing with mom. Some vets prefer to give full immunizations at 6 weeks of age but shots at this early stage are less than 30% effective. They have a much better immune response at 8 weeks. Our neonatal specialist recommends waiting until 8 weeks for full immmunization. Parvo is the most prevalent puppy illness so getting a head start with Neopar is important. We will talk more about vaccines in the take home information.
This week our puppies usually hit what is called a fear period. This period can last only an hour or a few days. We will take extra care to be sure that if they exhibit any fear towards anything we will scale back and individually help them overcome those fears slowly. Yawning, crying, hiding or avoiding are all signs of fear in a puppy. We will keep a close eye on activity to help them through any signs of fear or anxiety. Ruby's puppies are getting lots of child socialization as they are still living with Ruby and Ruby's family. Ruby's 'kids' are very familiar with puppies and they are a great help with working with our sweet newborns.

These babies are a bit ahead of schedule for our typical mountain doodles. They all opened their eyes before two weeks and they are up walking and playing! They are starting paper training today which will help to start a great foundation for quick potty training. They will move over to the dog door when they are about 5 weeks. The babies are getting lots of love and attention over at Ruby's guardian home. They get special socialization with the Anderson's four kids including 2 special needs kids that especially love to spend time with the babies. We had a special helper this week from one of our other awesome puppy families--Claire named these babies and will continue to help with their care as they get older. We love the bond that kids and dogs can have! Ruby will 'tell' us when she's ready for these puppies to start weaning and the time is getting close. We start with water and goats milk and then introduce soft ground food until the babies get their teeth.

Ruby is a patient and devoted mama and the babies are all nursing and sleeping and growing into little chubby bundles! They just started opening their eyes and are starting to crawl around the box. They are leaving the neonatal development period and moving into the transitional period. Traditional period is typically between days 14-21 but can vary a little from puppy to puppy. During this time we will begin to introduce them to a new novel item (toy, new bedding etc.) and or a new experience daily. These items and experiences will help to build a healthy startle/recover/curiosity/exploration cycle to lay the foundation for a confident puppy. We will start handling every part of their body this week to help expose them to grooming procedures. These puppies will have a lifetime of grooming and will need to be handled on their feet and toes and all over their bodies on a regular bases. Early exposure to common grooming practices will help them be relaxed during grooming for the rest of their lives.

Ruby has babies! We have seven cute little Golden Mountain doodles and they are all doing great! Labor was long but Ruby hung in there like a champ and took great care of her babies through all of the delivery. The babies were born here at the Hatch house but they moved back to Ruby's guardian family's home just a few blocks from where we live. The Anderson family adores Ruby and her puppies and they are getting lots of great gentle handling and exposure to kids and adults alike. This week they will spend their time eating and snuggling with each other and mama.

The babies are six weeks old! They have moved back to my house and everyone is using a dog door to go potty outside. YAY! They are also doing great sleeping together in crates at night. We have started giving treats when they are sitting politely which is the first step to learning to sit politely to say 'please.' They all have beautiful blocky heads and they do great with the kids that handle them every day.
The biggest development this week is in the coat coloring for Ember, Ash, Spark and Stone. Cinder and Flint have kept their expected Black and Tan coloring but everyone else is starting to develop signs of turning silver. It's difficult to predict exactly how the coat colors will progress but it is likely that at least some of the black/chocolate coat color will turn to a unique platinum/silver. Silver coloring always starts around the eyes and spreads throughout the rest of the coat. They may end up as a silver base with tan phantom points when they reach adulthood or they may have some darker black/chocolate color that remains along with the tan points. We will have to watch as they grow!

The babies are growing! Everyone has their eyes open and they are all starting to walk and wrestle. Now that everyone is more stable on their feet we have divided their box into distinct sleeping and potty areas. Over the next few days the babies will instinctively start to use the paper for potty and the bed for sleeping. We will start introducing soft food this week and the babies will spend time outside in the beautiful late summer weather. We handle and hold each puppy every day and we introduce new toys and experiences every day as well.

The babies spent their first week sleeping and snuggling and nursing. They are all doing great with mama Ruby's constant attention. For the first two weeks they will be in the neonatal period. Their neurological connection are continuing to develop--they can't see or hear. They are primarily driven by smell and touch. We hold and gently stress them each day to help develop stress tolerance which will contribute to their resilience and trainability as they grow. (white collar girl is pink collar in the newborn video)
Their markings are continuing to develop as they get older and we will see changes for the next month or so. Ash and Stone and possibly Flint have curly coats. The others will be wavy. Puppies change dramatically from birth until they go home at 8 weeks so we will continue to watch colors and curl and personality to see how everyone develops.

Ruby's babies are all up walking! They are just learning to use their wobbly little legs and their teeth are starting to erupt. As they get more and more steady on their feet they are awake a little more and are starting to interact with each other during the day. Ruby still nurses them every couple of hours and keeps them clean and warm. This week they will start using the litter box for potty training and we will have them spend a little time away from the litter on their own each day.

Ruby's "magical" puppies are doing great. We named them after some of our very favorite "people." (Harry Potter!) This week the babies are continuing to grow and develop. They are just starting to toddle around as well as creep in their little tummies. Fred has opened his eyes and a everyone else is getting close. We follow a special protocol to stimulate their little nervous systems to help them develop quick learning and adaptable temperaments. This next week they will all open their eyes and will start walking. Once everyone is up on their feet we will add a potty area to their box to start early potty training.

Ruby had six babies on Saturday 10/19/19! She did really well with labor and delivery and all six babies were born healthy and active. The babies are all nursing and growing right on schedule. Ruby has her babies at her guardian Reann's house. Reann is our puppy nanny and does a lot of work helping us keep our puppies clean and trained on schedule so it was a good match for Ruby to have her babies at her home where she is most comfortable. They will go to Kim's house in a few weeks when they are ready to be doggy door trained. For now we check Ruby for signs of mastitis or difficulty nursing every day, we keep baby toenails trimmed short, we make sure to provide lots of clean water and food at all times--nursing six babies is lots of work! The babies still have their eyes and ears closed. We follow out early neurological stimulation program with them every day to help develop resilient nervous systems during this critical growth period. They will all open their eyes and start creeping around over the next week.
